Connecting with the Past

The Civil War is just one chapter in the volumes of history along Alabama’s Coastal Connection. You can spend days touring our community museums, churches or cemeteries. Tour Dauphin Island, the cradle of the Louisiana Territory, home to Cadillac Square and Shell Mound Park, each rich with history and legend.

You can take a walk through the 1930s at the Bellingrath Home, or spend a day touring Old Town Daphne. We invite you to explore all of the many eras of our past that intrigue you. Here, we’re suggesting an itinerary of Civil War sites along byway.

“Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead!” Those famous words were shouted during the Battle of Mobile Bay by Admiral David G. Farragut. Historic forts Gaines and Morgan still stand, guarding the mouth of Mobile Bay and offering a glimpse of the past to the visitors of today. Through museums, re-enactments and living history demonstrations, visitors learn about the people, culture and lifestyle of those times.

The following sites are stops along the Battle of Mobile Bay Civil War Trail, which extends beyond the byway route. Be sure to get a copy of the trail guide for a more complete tour.
